The Bedford QLD was the most widely produced variant of the Bedford QL series — a family of robust military trucks developed by Bedford (a subsidiary of Vauxhall Motors) for the British Army during the Second World War.
Designed for general cargo and troop transport, the QLD featured a reliable 3.5-litre six-cylinder petrol engine delivering around 72 horsepower, combined with a 4×4 drivetrain that offered excellent off-road capability.
Introduced in 1941, the QLD became the workhorse of British logistical operations, capable of carrying a 3-ton payload over rough terrain.
Its forward-control cab and versatile flatbed body — often covered by a canvas canopy — made it ideal for transporting supplies, equipment, or personnel.
The vehicle could accommodate a driver and up to 11 troops, and had a typical range of around 250 km (156 miles) when fully loaded.
More than 52,000 Bedford QL trucks were produced during the war, with the QLD making up the majority.
Its service extended beyond WWII, seeing use in post-war military and civilian roles due to its durability and practicality.
Today, the Bedford QLD remains a popular and iconic example of British wartime engineering, often preserved by collectors and featured in historical displays.
