The Aero L-159A ALCA (Advanced Light Combat Aircraft) is a modern Czech-built light attack and advanced trainer aircraft developed by Aero Vodochody.

Designed in the 1990s to replace the ageing L-39 and L-29 fleets, the L-159A combines proven airframe design with Western avionics and weapon systems — creating a highly capable multi-role platform optimised for both training and frontline combat.

Powered by the Honeywell/ITEC F124-GA-100 turbofan engine, the L-159A offers excellent thrust-to-weight performance, high reliability, and reduced maintenance demands.

Its digital cockpit is fully NATO-compatible, featuring multi-function displays, HOTAS controls, and a MIL-STD-1553 databus, allowing seamless integration with Western targeting pods and precision munitions.

Primarily operated by the Czech Air Force, the L-159A serves in light attack, reconnaissance, and advanced training roles, and has also been exported for use by the Iraqi Air Force and private aggressor contractors such as Draken International.

It can carry up to 2,340 kg of ordnance, including laser-guided bombs, AGM-65 Mavericks, rocket pods, or air-to-air missiles, making it a versatile and economical platform for close air support and tactical missions.

With its sleek profile, reliable performance, and Western-standard systems built upon proven Czech engineering, the L-159A ALCA remains a symbol of the Czech Republic’s aerospace expertise and its successful transition from Soviet to NATO technologies.
