In the 15th century, Burgundian crossbowmen were an important component of the armies of the Duchy of Burgundy, one of the most powerful and wealthy states in Western Europe at the time.

Under rulers such as Charles the Bold, Burgundy fielded well-equipped and organised forces that combined traditional medieval troops with emerging military innovations.

Crossbowmen were valued for their ability to deliver powerful, armour-piercing shots with relatively high accuracy.

Unlike longbows, crossbows required less physical training, allowing rulers to recruit and train effective soldiers more quickly.

However, they were slower to reload, often requiring mechanical aids such as a windlass or cranequin, which made protection essential during combat.

To address this, Burgundian crossbowmen frequently operated alongside soldiers carrying large shields known as pavises.

These shields could be planted in the ground to provide cover while reloading, allowing crossbowmen to maintain sustained fire on the battlefield.

This combination of ranged firepower and defensive support made them particularly effective in both open battle and siege warfare.

Burgundian armies were known for their discipline and organisation, and crossbow units were often integrated into broader formations alongside pikemen, handgunners, and cavalry.

They played key roles in the conflicts of the later Middle Ages, including the Burgundian Wars, where they faced forces from the Swiss Confederation and other European powers.

The crossbow itself was a formidable weapon, capable of penetrating armour at close to medium range.

It was widely used across Europe during this period, but Burgundian forces were especially noted for their investment in well-equipped troops and combined-arms tactics.

By the end of the 15th century, the growing use of gunpowder weapons began to reduce the importance of crossbowmen on the battlefield.

Nevertheless, Burgundian crossbowmen remain a key example of late medieval infantry—bridging the gap between traditional missile troops and the rise of early firearms in European warfare.
