During the 16th and 17th centuries, irregular or “guerrilla-style” cavalry emerged as an important part of Korea’s defensive efforts, particularly during times of crisis such as the Imjin War.

Operating outside the structure of the regular army of the Joseon Dynasty, these mounted fighters relied on speed, local knowledge, and unconventional tactics to resist invading forces.

Unlike formal cavalry units, guerrilla cavalry were often composed of local militias, volunteers, and displaced soldiers who adapted to rapidly changing conditions.

Their equipment varied widely—typically lighter and less standardised than regular troops—allowing for greater mobility.

Riders might carry bows, spears, swords, or even early firearms, depending on availability and personal skill.

Their strength lay in irregular warfare tactics. Rather than engaging in open battles, Korean guerrilla cavalry specialised in ambushes, hit-and-run attacks, and disruption of enemy supply lines.

Using Korea’s mountainous terrain and dense forests to their advantage, they could strike quickly and disappear before enemy forces could respond effectively.

During the Imjin War, these forces played a crucial role in slowing Japanese advances and maintaining resistance behind enemy lines.

By targeting communication routes and isolated units, they helped undermine the logistical strength of the invading armies and supported the efforts of regular Korean and allied Ming forces.

In the years that followed, the experience of irregular warfare influenced military thinking within the Joseon Dynasty.

While guerrilla cavalry were not a permanent standing force, their effectiveness demonstrated the value of flexibility, local initiative, and mobility in warfare.
