At the heart of Spanish infantry success was the tercio system—a flexible formation that integrated pikemen, arquebusiers, and sometimes swordsmen into a cohesive fighting unit.

Pikemen formed dense defensive blocks to protect against cavalry and hold the line, while arquebusiers delivered coordinated gunfire to weaken enemy formations before close combat.

Spanish soldiers were known for their professionalism and training.

Unlike many armies of the time that relied heavily on mercenaries, Spain developed a core of experienced troops who served in long campaigns across Europe.

This gave them a significant advantage in both battlefield cohesion and adaptability.
