Red Box 1/72 Chinese Heavy Cavalry 16-17 Century # 72119
In the 16th and 17th centuries, Chinese heavy cavalry represented the most heavily protected and hard-hitting mounted troops of the period, serving under both the Ming Dynasty and the rising Qing Dynasty.
These elite units were designed for shock action—delivering powerful charges intended to break enemy formations and decide battles quickly.
Heavy cavalrymen were typically equipped with substantial armour, often made from lamellar plates or reinforced brigandine, covering the torso, limbs, and sometimes the face with helmets and visors.
In some cases, their horses were also partially armoured with barding, providing additional protection during charges.
This level of defence allowed them to engage directly with enemy troops while withstanding missile fire and close combat.
Their primary weapons reflected their offensive role.
Long lances or spears were used in the initial charge to disrupt enemy lines, followed by sabres or straight swords for close-quarters fighting.
While bows were still carried by some cavalry, heavy units focused more on impact and melee combat than on ranged skirmishing.
Under the later Ming Dynasty, heavy cavalry were used to counter both internal rebellions and external threats, particularly along the northern borders.
However, as gunpowder weapons became more widespread, the dominance of heavily armoured troops began to decline, as firearms and artillery reduced the advantages of heavy armour on the battlefield.
With the rise of the Qing Dynasty, cavalry—especially among the Manchu Banner forces—again became central to military success.
Although not always as heavily armoured as earlier forms, Qing cavalry retained the shock tactics and battlefield discipline associated with heavy cavalry, combining them with mobility and traditional mounted archery skills.
Their effectiveness played a major role in the conquest of China and the consolidation of Qing rule.
Chinese heavy cavalry of this era illustrate a transitional phase in military history, where traditional armoured warfare met the growing influence of gunpowder technology—marking the gradual shift toward more modern forms of combat.
