During the 16th and 17th centuries, Turkish sailors—serving mainly within the navy of the Ottoman Empire—were part of one of the most powerful maritime forces in the Mediterranean.

At its peak, the Ottoman navy controlled key sea routes, protected trade, and projected military strength from North Africa to the eastern Mediterranean.

The backbone of this naval power was the galley, a long, narrow ship propelled by both sails and rows of oars.

These vessels were highly manoeuvrable and well suited to Mediterranean conditions.

Turkish sailors worked alongside a diverse crew that included rowers (often slaves or prisoners), marines, and elite soldiers such as Janissaries, creating a coordinated fighting force capable of both naval and land combat operations.

In battle, sailors were responsible for navigating and positioning the ship, while also taking part in combat.

Naval engagements were typically fought at close range—ships would fire limited cannon volleys, then attempt to ram or grapple enemy vessels.

Once secured, fighting shifted to boarding actions, where sailors and soldiers engaged in hand-to-hand combat using swords, axes, and firearms.

A defining moment of the era was the Battle of Lepanto, where an Ottoman fleet clashed with a coalition of European powers.

Although the Ottomans were defeated, they rapidly rebuilt their navy, demonstrating their resilience and continued importance as a maritime power.

Earlier in the century, commanders like Hayreddin Barbarossa helped establish Ottoman dominance at sea, securing victories and expanding influence.

Turkish sailors also played a key role in the activities of the Barbary corsairs, conducting raids and privateering across the Mediterranean and along European coasts.

By the late 17th century, naval warfare began to shift toward large sailing ships equipped with heavy artillery, reducing the effectiveness of traditional galley fleets.

Even so, Turkish sailors of this period were central to Ottoman military success and remain an important part of early modern naval history.
