In the 16th and 17th centuries, Korean light cavalry served as fast-moving and flexible units within the military of the Joseon Dynasty.

While Korea is often associated with strong infantry and naval forces, cavalry still played an important supporting role, particularly in reconnaissance, communication, and rapid response on land.

Light cavalry were typically equipped for speed rather than heavy combat. Armour was lighter than that of elite or heavy troops—often consisting of simple lamellar or padded protection—allowing riders to move quickly across varied terrain.

Their weapons reflected this mobility, with bows being a primary tool, alongside spears, sabres, and occasionally early firearms such as matchlock muskets.

These mounted troops were especially valuable during times of crisis, including the Imjin War.

During this conflict, Korean forces faced large-scale invasions by Japanese armies.

Light cavalry units were used to scout enemy movements, harass supply lines, and relay information between commanders, helping to coordinate defensive efforts in a rapidly changing battlefield environment.

Although Korean cavalry did not dominate warfare in the same way as some steppe-based armies, they were influenced by neighbouring traditions, particularly from China and the northern nomadic cultures.

This influence can be seen in their use of mounted archery and flexible tactics.

In the later 17th century, as stability returned to the Joseon Dynasty, cavalry continued to serve in frontier defence and internal security roles.

Their ability to cover large distances quickly made them essential for patrols and maintaining control in remote regions.

Korean light cavalry of this period represent a practical and adaptive force—valued less for direct battlefield shock and more for speed, intelligence gathering, and tactical support within a broader military system.
