In the 16th and 17th centuries, Korean heavy cavalry formed an elite but relatively limited component of the military forces of the Joseon Dynasty.

While Korea’s armies relied primarily on infantry and fortified positions, heavy cavalry were maintained as specialised troops for decisive battlefield roles.

These cavalrymen were equipped with substantial armour, often constructed from lamellar plates or scale, designed to protect against arrows and melee weapons.

Helmets and reinforced cuirasses were common, and in some cases horses were fitted with partial barding, offering additional protection during charges.

This level of equipment distinguished them clearly from lighter, more mobile cavalry units.

Their primary role was shock combat. Armed with spears or lances, they would deliver powerful charges intended to disrupt or break enemy formations.

Once engaged, they relied on swords or sabres for close fighting. Although some retained the use of bows, heavy cavalry focused mainly on direct engagement rather than skirmishing.

During the Imjin War, the effectiveness of heavy cavalry was challenged by the widespread use of firearms by Japanese forces.

Arquebuses allowed infantry to deliver sustained volleys, making traditional cavalry charges more dangerous and less decisive.

As a result, Korean heavy cavalry were often used more cautiously, supporting infantry operations or exploiting favourable terrain.

Despite these challenges, heavy cavalry remained a symbol of military status and strength within the Joseon Dynasty.

They were typically composed of experienced or better-equipped soldiers and played key roles in moments requiring resilience and offensive power.

Korean heavy cavalry of this period reflect a transitional stage in warfare—where traditional armoured mounted troops continued to serve important roles, even as gunpowder weapons increasingly reshaped the nature of battle.
