The Bell P-400 Airacobra was an export version of the famous P-39 Airacobra fighter, originally produced for the Royal Air Force before being adopted in significant numbers by the United States Army Air Forces during the early years of the Second World War.

Designed by Bell Aircraft, the Airacobra was one of the most unconventional fighters of its era.

Its Allison V-1710 engine was mounted behind the pilot, driving the propeller via a long extension shaft running beneath the cockpit floor.

This unique configuration allowed for a heavy weapon to be mounted directly in the nose, firing through the propeller hub.

The P-400 was armed with a 20 mm Hispano cannon (rather than the 37 mm cannon fitted to many later P-39 variants), supplemented by .50 calibre and .30 calibre machine guns.

Its tricycle landing gear — rare for the time — gave it excellent ground handling and a modern appearance.

Originally intended for British service, the aircraft was designated “Airacobra I” by the RAF.

However, performance at higher altitudes proved disappointing compared to European expectations, largely due to the absence of a turbo-supercharger.

Many aircraft were subsequently diverted to US service, where they saw combat in the Pacific, particularly during the Guadalcanal campaign in 1942.

At lower altitudes, the P-400 performed effectively as a ground-attack and tactical support aircraft.

In the hands of skilled pilots, it proved rugged, heavily armed, and well suited to the conditions of the Pacific theatre.

The Bell P-400 Airacobra stands as an important early-war fighter, notable for its innovative engineering and distinctive layout.

Though often overshadowed by later Allied fighters, it played a meaningful role in the critical early campaigns of the Second World War.
