Trumpeter 1/72 LCM-3 Vehicle Landing Craft D-Day # 07213
The LCM-3 (Landing Craft Mechanized, Mark 3) was a vital component of Allied amphibious operations during the Second World War, most notably during the D-Day landings in June 1944.
Designed to transport heavier equipment than smaller landing craft, the LCM-3 was capable of delivering vehicles such as trucks, artillery, and even medium tanks directly onto the beaches.
Constructed with a rugged steel hull and a shallow draft, the LCM-3 could approach close to shore before lowering its large bow ramp, allowing vehicles and troops to disembark quickly under combat conditions.
Powered by twin engines, it offered reliable performance and manoeuvrability, even in the challenging surf conditions often encountered during amphibious assaults.
During the Normandy landings, LCM-3 craft played a crucial role in reinforcing the initial waves of infantry by bringing in essential vehicles, heavy weapons, and supplies.
Their ability to carry armoured vehicles helped strengthen beachheads and support the push inland against German defences.
Although relatively simple in design, the LCM-3 was highly effective and adaptable, used not only in Europe but across multiple theatres of war.
Its contribution to D-Day and other amphibious operations highlights the importance of specialised landing craft in modern warfare, enabling the rapid build-up of combat power directly from sea to shore.

| Short Description | The Landing Craft: The LCM (Landing Craft Mechanised) saw more than 8,500 were built in American yards between 1942 and 1945. As Britain had no tank-carrying craft lighter than LCT (Landing Craft Tank), LCMs were also readily adopted by the Royal Navy. LCMs could be either carried on ship davits, or towed across the English Channel. Due to the danger of swamping in rough seas, most LCMs were towed across the Channel and not loaded with troops until the morning of D-Day. LCMs could be readily identified by their unique perforated bow ramp. As tanks grew larger and heavier, the LCM(3) was developed with a longer hull and greater buoyancy, which allowed a 30-ton tank to be carried. They could also handle up to 30 tons of cargo or 60 troops. The LCM(3) had a crew of 4 men and was armed with two 50-calibre machine guns. The LCM(3) was not designed for the crew to live aboard and it remained dependent upon a parent ship over long periods of time. As well as taking part in the D-Day landings, LCM(3)s were also used in large numbers in the Pacific Island campaigns and the crossing of the Rhine in Germany. Item No 07213 Model Brief |
