The Sd.Kfz. 9 (18t) half-track, commonly known as the “Famo,” was the heaviest half-track vehicle used by Germany during the Second World War, designed primarily for heavy recovery and towing duties.
Built to handle the increasing weight of German armoured vehicles, it became an essential part of frontline logistics and recovery operations.
Powered by a robust engine and featuring a combination of front wheels for steering and rear tracks for traction, the Sd.Kfz. 9 was capable of moving across difficult terrain while hauling substantial loads.
Its primary role was to recover damaged or immobilised tanks from the battlefield, often working in teams when dealing with the heaviest vehicles such as the Tiger tank.
Paired with the Sd.Ah. 116 trailer, the combination formed a powerful heavy transport system capable of carrying large armoured vehicles and equipment over longer distances.
The trailer featured a low-loading design, allowing tanks and other heavy machinery to be driven or winched aboard for transport, reducing wear on vehicles and enabling more efficient redeployment.
This pairing proved invaluable for maintaining armoured units in operational condition, ensuring that damaged vehicles could be recovered, repaired, and returned to service.
