The Antonov An-26 is a versatile twin-engine turboprop transport aircraft developed by the Soviet design bureau Antonov in the late 1960s.
Designed as a tactical military transport, the aircraft was built to operate from short and unprepared airstrips while carrying troops, cargo or equipment to forward operating bases.
Its rugged construction and reliable performance quickly made it a widely used aircraft across many military and civilian operators around the world.
Powered by two Ivchenko AI-24 turboprop engines, the An-26 is capable of transporting several tons of cargo or up to around 40 passengers.
One of its most distinctive features is the rear cargo ramp, which allows for rapid loading and unloading of vehicles, equipment and supplies, as well as parachute operations for airborne troops.
The aircraft also includes a small auxiliary jet engine used during take-off to improve performance when operating from short runways or in hot conditions.
Following the breakup of the Soviet Union, the Ukrainian Air Force continued to operate the An-26 as a key tactical transport aircraft.
It has been used for troop transport, cargo delivery, medical evacuation and humanitarian missions, supporting both military operations and civil assistance roles.
With its high-mounted wings, robust landing gear and practical cargo design, the Antonov An-26 remains one of the most recognisable military transport aircraft developed by Antonov and an interesting subject for aviation enthusiasts and scale modellers alike.
