The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I was the first production version of the legendary British fighter, entering RAF service in 1938.
Powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin II or III engine, it carried eight .303 Browning machine guns and became a mainstay during the early stages of the Second World War, most notably the Battle of Britain in 1940.
Its sleek elliptical wing gave excellent maneuverability and speed, making it a formidable opponent to the Luftwaffe.
The Spitfire Mk.II, introduced in late 1940, refined the design with the more powerful Merlin XII engine, a strengthened airframe, and the option of a three-bladed constant-speed propeller.
While visually similar to the Mk.I, the Mk.II offered improved performance and reliability, ensuring the Spitfire remained the backbone of Fighter Command through 1941.
