Red Box 1/72 Jacobite Rebellion British Infantry # 72049
During the Jacobite Rebellions of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, British government infantry—often referred to as “redcoats”—formed the backbone of the forces loyal to the Crown.
Their role was to suppress attempts by Jacobite supporters to restore the exiled Stuart monarchy, culminating in the final uprising of 1745–46.
These infantry soldiers were part of a professional, increasingly disciplined army.
They were typically armed with flintlock muskets fitted with bayonets, allowing them to fight effectively both at range and in close combat.
Standardised uniforms—most notably the red coat and tricorn hat—not only identified them as government troops but also reflected the growing organisation of the British Army during this period.
Tactically, British infantry relied on coordinated volleys of musket fire delivered in line formations, followed by bayonet charges to break enemy ranks.
This method proved particularly effective against the more irregular Highland Jacobite forces, whose traditional charge tactics were formidable but less adaptable to sustained musket volleys.
Under the command of figures such as Prince William, Duke of Cumberland, government infantry played a decisive role at the Battle of Culloden.
There, disciplined firing lines and improved tactics decisively defeated the Jacobite army led by Charles Edward Stuart.
Culloden marked the end of the Jacobite cause and was the last pitched battle fought on British soil.
Following their victory, British infantry units were also involved in enforcing government control across the Scottish Highlands, contributing to significant social and cultural changes in the region.
Their role in the Jacobite conflicts represents a key moment in the development of Britain’s modern army and the consolidation of state power across the British Isles.
