Trumpeter 1/700 SS Jeremiah O'Brien WWII Liberty Ship # 05755
The SS Jeremiah O’Brien is one of the most famous surviving Liberty ships of the Second World War, representing the vast fleet of cargo vessels that played a vital role in sustaining Allied operations across the globe.
Built in the United States as part of an emergency wartime shipbuilding programme, Liberty ships were designed for rapid, large-scale production—simple, robust, and capable of transporting essential supplies such as fuel, ammunition, vehicles, and food.
Launched in 1943, the Jeremiah O’Brien served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres, braving the constant threat of enemy submarines and aircraft.
Like other Liberty ships, it was not heavily armed compared to warships, but it carried defensive guns and was crewed by a combination of merchant seamen and naval gunners.
Its role was critical—keeping supply lines open and ensuring that front-line forces received the materials they needed to continue fighting.
The ship is perhaps best known for its participation in the D-Day landings in June 1944, where it helped deliver vital cargo to support the Allied invasion of Normandy.
This operation highlighted the importance of the Liberty fleet in large-scale amphibious campaigns.
Today, the SS Jeremiah O’Brien is preserved as a museum ship and is one of the very few fully operational Liberty ships still in existence.
Maintained in working condition, it stands as a powerful tribute to the industrial effort and maritime service that underpinned Allied victory, offering a rare, tangible connection to the ships and crews that kept the war effort moving forward.

| Short Description | Jeremiah O’Brien is a product of an emergency shipbuilding program in World War II that resulted in the construction of more than 2,700 Liberty ships. Designed as cheap, quickly built, simple cargo steamers, the liberty ships formed the backbone of a massive sea lift of troops, arms, and material to every theatre of the war. The ship made wartime voyages between the East Coast, Canada, and the United Kingdom, to South America, Australia, and the Philippines. From June until December 1994, O’Brien made 11 trips between the United Kingdom and Normandy in support of the D-Day invasion, including a trip from Belfast, lrelend to Normandy with troops from Patton’s Fifth Division.
