The Supermarine Spitfire PR (Photo Reconnaissance) Types A, B, and E were early unarmed adaptations of the Spitfire designed to carry cameras in place of guns.
The PR Type A, introduced in late 1939, was the first true reconnaissance Spitfire, fitted with a single vertical camera in the fuselage.
The PR Type B followed with twin vertical cameras for greater coverage, while the PR Type E introduced oblique cameras for angled photography, expanding mission flexibility.
Painted in special camouflage—often pale blue or pink for high- and low-altitude concealment—these aircraft relied solely on speed and altitude for defense.
They provided vital intelligence over enemy territory and laid the foundation for the RAF’s dedicated reconnaissance squadrons.
