The Bell XFL-1 Airabonita was an experimental carrier-based fighter developed in the late 1930s by Bell Aircraft for the United States Navy.

It was a navalised development of the Bell P-39 Airacobra, sharing its distinctive mid-engine layout and tricycle landing gear—features that were highly unconventional at the time.

Designed to meet a U.S. Navy requirement for a modern shipborne fighter, the XFL-1 retained the P-39’s inline engine mounted behind the cockpit, driving the propeller via a long shaft.

However, it incorporated naval features such as a strengthened undercarriage and an arrestor hook for carrier operations.

Its armament was intended to include a cannon firing through the propeller hub, along with machine guns.

Despite its innovative design, the XFL-1 Airabonita suffered from performance and handling issues during testing.

It was heavier and less manoeuvrable than expected, and it failed to meet the Navy’s requirements for carrier-based operations.

As a result, the project was not pursued beyond the prototype stage.

The Bell XFL-1 Airabonita remains an interesting example of early experimentation in naval fighter design, illustrating both the ambition and the challenges of adapting advanced aircraft concepts for carrier use.
