RS Models 1/72 Dewoitine D-520 France 1940 # 92312
The Dewoitine D.520 was France’s most advanced and capable fighter aircraft at the time of the Battle of France, representing a significant leap forward in French aviation design on the eve of the Second World War.
Developed by Dewoitine, the D.520 combined speed, manoeuvrability, and firepower in a modern monoplane configuration.
Powered by a Hispano-Suiza 12Y-45 engine, the D.520 could reach speeds of over 330 mph (530 km/h), putting it on par with early versions of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 it faced in combat.
Its streamlined design, enclosed cockpit, and retractable landing gear made it one of the most sophisticated fighters in French service at the time.
Armament typically consisted of a powerful 20mm cannon firing through the propeller hub, supported by four 7.5mm machine guns mounted in the wings.
This combination gave the D.520 strong offensive capability, allowing it to effectively engage both enemy aircraft and ground targets.
During the campaign of 1940, D.520 units proved to be highly effective, achieving favourable combat results against German aircraft despite being introduced relatively late and in limited numbers.
French pilots appreciated its handling and performance, often considering it the best fighter available to them during the battle.
Following the fall of France, the D.520 continued to see service under Vichy French forces and was later used by various Axis-aligned and Allied units, as well as post-war French forces.
Its adaptability and solid design ensured a longer service life than many of its contemporaries.
The Dewoitine D.520 (France, 1940) remains a symbol of France’s determined resistance during a critical moment in history, standing out as a capable and competitive fighter in one of the most dramatic campaigns of the Second World War.
