The Kawasaki Ki-61-I Tei was an advanced variant of Japan’s only mass-produced liquid-cooled fighter of the Second World War, developed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries.

Known to the Allies by the reporting name “Tony,” the Kawasaki Ki-61 stood out from other Japanese fighters due to its inline engine, giving it a more streamlined, Western-style appearance.

The “Tei” version represented one of the later developments of the Ki-61-I series, focusing on improved firepower and survivability.

It was typically armed with heavier weapons, including 20mm cannons, replacing earlier lighter machine guns.

This upgrade made it far more effective against well-protected Allied aircraft such as bombers.

Powered by a licence-built Daimler-Benz engine, the Ki-61-I Tei offered good speed and diving performance, along with solid durability compared to many other Japanese fighters of the time.

While not as agile as some of its contemporaries, it was better suited to high-speed combat and interception roles.

The Ki-61 saw extensive service in multiple theatres, including the defence of the Japanese home islands and operations in New Guinea.

In these roles, the Ki-61-I Tei was used to intercept Allied bombers and engage escorting fighters, where its improved armament proved particularly valuable.

The Kawasaki Ki-61-I Tei reflects Japan’s efforts to modernise its fighter force during the war, combining European engine design with Japanese airframe engineering to produce a capable and distinctive combat aircraft.
