RS Models 1/72 Doflug D-3801 Swiss Fighter # 92311
The Doflug D-3801 was a Swiss-built fighter aircraft developed during the Second World War, representing an advanced evolution of the earlier Morane-Saulnier designs produced under licence in Switzerland.
Manufactured by Doflug (Dornier-Werke Altenrhein), the D-3801 was based on the French Morane-Saulnier M.S.406, but featured significant local improvements that enhanced its performance and combat capability.
One of the most notable upgrades was the installation of a more powerful Hispano-Suiza 12Y-51 engine, which provided improved speed and climb performance compared to earlier variants such as the D-3800.
This allowed the aircraft to better fulfil its role as an interceptor within Switzerland’s air defence network.
Armament was also strengthened, typically consisting of a 20mm cannon mounted in the engine hub and supplemented by machine guns in the wings.
This gave the D-3801 a more effective punch against potential intruders, reflecting the increasing demands of aerial combat during the war.
Although Switzerland remained neutral throughout the conflict, the D-3801 played an important role in safeguarding Swiss airspace.
It was used to intercept and escort foreign aircraft that violated Swiss neutrality, as well as to demonstrate the country’s ability to defend its borders.
Visually, the aircraft is distinctive for its Swiss national markings—bold white crosses set against red backgrounds—often seen on the wings and tail, along with camouflage schemes suited to the Alpine environment.
The Doflug D-3801 stands as a testament to Swiss engineering and adaptation, transforming an imported design into a capable home-built fighter that served reliably into the post-war years, remaining in operation until the late 1940s.
