The Dornier Do 17F was a reconnaissance variant of the German Dornier Do 17, developed in the late 1930s by Dornier Flugzeugwerke.

While the Do 17 was originally designed as a fast light bomber, the F-series was specifically adapted for long-range photographic and visual reconnaissance duties.

Externally similar to early bomber versions, the Do 17F retained the aircraft’s distinctive slim fuselage, which earned it the nickname “Flying Pencil.”

However, instead of a full bomb load, the reconnaissance variant was equipped with cameras and additional fuel capacity, allowing it to cover greater distances and remain airborne for extended missions.

This made it well suited for intelligence gathering, mapping, and battlefield observation.

The Do 17F typically carried a reduced defensive armament compared to bomber versions, relying instead on its relatively high speed and altitude performance to avoid interception.

Its glazed nose section provided excellent visibility for the crew, which was essential for accurate reconnaissance work.

Aircraft of this type were used by the German Luftwaffe in the early stages of the Second World War, including during campaigns such as the Invasion of Poland.

As the war progressed and more advanced reconnaissance aircraft were introduced, the Do 17F was gradually phased out of frontline service.

The Dornier Do 17F represents an important early-war reconnaissance platform, demonstrating how bomber designs could be effectively adapted for intelligence roles during a period of rapid aviation development.
