The I-1 was the first Soviet-designed monoplane fighter aircraft, developed in the 1920s as part of the Soviet Union’s early efforts to establish an independent aviation industry.

Designed by Nikolai Polikarpov, the aircraft—also known as the IL-400—represented a significant step forward in Soviet aeronautical engineering.

At a time when many fighters still relied on biplane configurations, the I-1 introduced a more modern monoplane layout, reflecting the shift toward improved speed and aerodynamic efficiency.

Constructed primarily from wood, the aircraft featured a streamlined fuselage and enclosed engine installation, showcasing innovative design ideas for its era.

Despite its forward-thinking concept, the I-1 encountered stability and handling issues during testing, which limited its success and prevented it from entering widespread service.

Nevertheless, the experience gained from its development proved invaluable, contributing to the rapid advancement of Soviet aircraft design in the years that followed.

Though produced only in limited numbers, the I-1 holds an important place in aviation history as a pioneering step in the evolution of Soviet fighter aircraft, marking the transition toward more modern and capable designs.
