The Soviet BM-24-12 multiple rocket launcher was a powerful evolution of the “Katyusha” rocket artillery concept, mounted on the robust ZIL-157 chassis for enhanced mobility and battlefield flexibility.
Developed during the early Cold War, it provided the Soviet Army with a heavy rocket artillery system capable of delivering devastating firepower.
Equipped with 12 launch rails for large 240mm rockets, the BM-24-12 was designed to strike targets with significant explosive force.
Compared to smaller systems, it delivered heavier payloads over considerable distances, making it highly effective against fortified positions, troop concentrations, and infrastructure targets.
Like other Katyusha systems, the BM-24-12 could fire its full salvo in rapid succession, saturating a wide area in seconds.
Mounted on the dependable ZIL-157 6×6 truck, it benefited from excellent cross-country mobility, allowing it to quickly reposition after firing and reduce vulnerability to counter-battery attacks.
Although less precise than conventional artillery, its strength lay in overwhelming firepower and shock effect, continuing the doctrine established by earlier Soviet rocket artillery.
