The Soviet BM-13-16 Katyusha mounted on the ZIL-131 chassis represents a later adaptation of one of the most iconic rocket artillery systems ever developed.
Originally introduced during the Second World War, the Katyusha concept was carried forward into the Cold War, combining proven firepower with improved mobility.
The BM-13-16 system was equipped with 16 launch rails for 132mm rockets, capable of delivering a rapid and devastating salvo against enemy positions.
Its strength lay in its ability to saturate large target areas within seconds, creating both physical destruction and significant psychological impact.
Mounted on the reliable ZIL-131 6×6 truck, this variant benefited from enhanced off-road capability and durability, allowing it to operate in a wide range of environments.
The mobility of the platform enabled quick deployment and relocation, a key tactical advantage that reduced vulnerability to counter-battery fire.
Serving with the Soviet Army, systems of this type were used to support offensive operations, suppress enemy defences, and deliver concentrated firepower where it was most needed.
