The Sukhoi Su-2R was a reconnaissance variant of the Su-2 light bomber, developed by Sukhoi for service with the Soviet Air Forces during the early years of the Second World War.

Adapted for battlefield observation and intelligence gathering, it played an important role in supporting Soviet ground and air operations.

Based on the standard Su-2 airframe, the reconnaissance version was equipped with cameras and specialised observation equipment, allowing it to carry out photographic and visual reconnaissance missions over enemy territory.

Its relatively high speed and good handling characteristics helped it evade interception, while its defensive armament provided a degree of protection during hazardous low- and medium-altitude flights.

Operating in some of the most intense conditions of the Eastern Front, the Su-2R was tasked with gathering vital intelligence on enemy positions, troop movements, and supply lines.

This information was essential for planning operations and directing artillery and air strikes.

Although later replaced by more advanced reconnaissance aircraft, the Su-2R made a valuable contribution during a critical phase of the war, demonstrating the versatility of the Su-2 design.
