ICM 1/72 Sukhoi Su-2 WWII Soviet Light Bomber # 72081
The Sukhoi Su-2 was a Soviet light bomber developed in the late 1930s by Sukhoi, entering service with the Soviet Air Forces in the early stages of the Second World War.
Designed as a versatile short-range bomber and reconnaissance aircraft, it played a key role during the opening phases of the conflict on the Eastern Front.
Featuring a modern all-metal construction and a streamlined design, the Su-2 offered good speed and handling for its class.
Its enclosed cockpit and relatively advanced layout reflected the rapid progress of Soviet aircraft design during this period.
The aircraft was capable of carrying a useful bomb load while also being equipped with defensive armament to protect against enemy fighters.
The Su-2 was widely used in 1941 and 1942, carrying out bombing, reconnaissance, and ground attack missions under extremely challenging conditions.
Its reliability and adaptability made it a valuable asset during a time when the Soviet Union was under intense pressure from advancing German forces.
Although it was gradually replaced by more heavily armed and specialised aircraft such as the Ilyushin Il-2, the Sukhoi Su-2 made an important contribution during a critical period of the war.
The Sukhoi Su-2 stands as an early example of Sukhoi’s aircraft design heritage, combining versatility and solid performance in a design that helped bridge the gap between pre-war concepts and more advanced wartime aircraft.
