The Dassault Mirage IIIE was the definitive multi-role development of France’s iconic delta-wing fighter, the Mirage III.

Building upon the success of the earlier interceptor variants, the IIIE introduced extended range, advanced avionics, and ground-attack capabilities, transforming the Mirage from a pure interceptor into a true all-weather, multi-mission combat aircraft.

Entering service with the Armée de l’Air in 1964, the Mirage IIIE featured a lengthened fuselage to house additional fuel tanks and sophisticated navigation and attack systems.

Powered by the SNECMA Atar 9C turbojet, it could reach speeds exceeding Mach 2.2, giving it exceptional performance in both high-altitude interception and low-level strike missions.

The aircraft was equipped with the Thomson-CSF Cyrano II radar, enabling precision targeting for bombs, rockets, and guided weapons, while still retaining the agility and climb rate that made the Mirage famous.

The Mirage IIIE’s versatility made it one of the most widely exported variants, serving in numerous air forces worldwide — including France, Spain, Switzerland, South Africa, Australia, Lebanon, and Pakistan.

Its combination of speed, reliability, and adaptability established it as one of the most successful European jet fighters of the Cold War era.
