The Dassault Mirage IIIO was the Australian-built variant of France’s legendary delta-wing fighter, the Mirage III, and served as the backbone of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) fighter fleet from the mid-1960s to the 1980s.

Produced under licence by the Government Aircraft Factories (GAF) in Melbourne, the Mirage IIIO combined the proven performance of the French design with equipment and systems tailored to Australian requirements.

The Mirage IIIO retained the elegant tailless delta-wing configuration that made the Mirage series famous, providing excellent high-speed stability and supersonic capability.

Powered by the SNECMA Atar 9C turbojet, it could reach speeds of Mach 2.2, climb rapidly to high altitude, and deliver precision strikes using a wide range of weapons.

The aircraft was equipped with advanced avionics for its time, including the Cyrano radar, and armed with two 30 mm DEFA cannons plus air-to-air missiles or ground-attack ordnance.

Two main versions served the RAAF: the Mirage IIIO(F) for fighter operations and the Mirage IIIO(A) configured for ground attack.

Entering service in 1964, they formed the core of RAAF’s air defence units, operating from Bases such as Williamtown and Butterworth (Malaysia), where they played a crucial role in regional security during the Cold War.

Sleek, powerful, and distinctly Australian in its service legacy, the Dassault Mirage IIIO represented the RAAF’s transition into the supersonic era.

Its long and proud career helped establish Australia’s modern aerospace capabilities and remains a symbol of national aviation achievement.
