The Bell P-39Q-25 Airacobra was a World War II-era fighter aircraft produced by Bell Aircraft Corporation.

It was an extension of the P-39 Airacobra line, which was notable for its innovative mid-engine design and tricycle landing gear configuration.

The P-39Q-25 Airacobra featured improvements over earlier variants, including a more powerful engine, upgraded armament, and revised systems. It was powered by a single Allison V-1710-85 engine, which was mounted centrally behind the cockpit.

This placement allowed for a nose-mounted cannon, typically an M4 37mm cannon firing through the aircraft's propeller hub, providing potent firepower for ground attack missions.

With its tricycle landing gear and relatively heavy armament, the P-39Q-25 was primarily employed in the ground attack role, particularly in the Pacific Theater of Operations.

It was utilized by several Allied air forces, including the United States Army Air Forces, the Soviet Air Forces, and others.

While the P-39 Airacobra series faced criticism for certain performance limitations, particularly at higher altitudes, it found success in low-altitude combat and ground attack roles.

Its unique design and armament configuration made it a distinctive aircraft of its time, contributing to the Allied war effort during World War II.

Short Description

The Bell P-39 Airacobra was one of the principal American fighter aircraft in service when the United States entered World War II.

The P-39 was used with great success by the Soviet Air Force, which scored the highest number of kills per pilot attributed to any U.S. fighter type.

Other major users of the type include the Free French, the Royal Air Force, the United States Army Air Forces, and the Italian Co-Belligerent Air Force.

Designed by Bell Aircraft, it had an innovative layout, with the engine installed in the center fuselage, behind the pilot, and driving a tractor propeller via a long shaft.

It was also the first fighter fitted with a tricycle undercarriage. Although its mid-engine placement was innovative, the P-39 design was handicapped by the absence of an efficient turbo-supercharger, limiting it to low-altitude work.

Together with the derivative P-63 Kingcobra, the P-39 was one of the most successful fixed-wing aircraft manufactured by Bell.
