The 100mm Polish wz. 14/19 Howitzer (Early Version) was a dependable field artillery piece that traced its origins back to First World War designs, later modernised to meet the needs of the interwar Polish Army.

Based on an Austro-Hungarian pattern developed by Škoda Works, the howitzer was adopted and upgraded by Poland following independence, becoming a key component of its artillery forces.

The “wz. 14/19” designation reflects this dual heritage—initially introduced as a 1914 model and subsequently modernised in 1919.

The early version retained many of the original design characteristics, including a box trail carriage and relatively simple recoil system, but incorporated improvements to increase reliability and ease of operation.

It was designed to fire 100mm high-explosive shells in a high-trajectory arc, making it particularly effective against entrenched infantry, fortifications, and targets concealed behind cover.

Although not as advanced as later interwar artillery systems, the wz. 14/19 offered a good balance of firepower and mobility. It could be horse-drawn or towed by vehicles, allowing it to support infantry formations in a variety of battlefield conditions.

Its relatively straightforward construction also made it robust and easier to maintain in the field.

In Polish service, the early version of the 100mm wz. 14/19 howitzer formed part of divisional artillery units and saw action during the 1939 defensive campaign.

While it was beginning to show its age by this point, it remained a reliable and effective weapon when employed in its intended support role.

Today, the 100mm Polish wz. 14/19 Howitzer (Early Version) is remembered as a transitional artillery system—bridging the gap between First World War technology and the evolving demands of modern warfare, and serving as a backbone of Polish artillery during a critical period in its history.
