First To Fight Kits 1/72 7,5 cm LeIG 18 - German Infantry Gun # 031
The 7.5 cm leIG 18 (leichte Infanteriegeschütz 18) was a standard German light infantry support gun used extensively by the Wehrmacht throughout the Second World War.
Designed to provide close-range artillery support to infantry units, it played a vital role in engaging enemy strongpoints, machine gun nests, and fortified positions.
Firing 75mm high-explosive shells, the leIG 18 was capable of both direct and indirect fire, giving it flexibility on the battlefield.
It could be used to target enemies in the open or those concealed behind cover, such as trenches and buildings.
Its relatively short barrel and low muzzle velocity were well-suited for high-angle fire, making it particularly effective in close support situations.
One of the key advantages of the leIG 18 was its mobility. Lightweight for an artillery piece, it could be moved by its crew over short distances or towed by light vehicles or horses.
This allowed it to keep pace with advancing infantry and be quickly repositioned as battlefield conditions changed.
The gun was typically operated by a small crew and protected by a gun shield, which offered limited defence against small arms fire and shrapnel.
In addition to high-explosive rounds, it could also fire smoke and, in some cases, hollow-charge ammunition for limited anti-armour capability.
Widely used in early campaigns such as Poland and France, as well as on the Eastern Front, the leIG 18 proved to be a reliable and effective infantry support weapon.
Its combination of firepower, versatility, and mobility made it an essential part of German infantry divisions.
Today, the 7.5 cm leIG 18 is remembered as a classic example of a dedicated infantry gun—designed to bring artillery support directly to the front line, where it could have an immediate impact on the outcome of engagements.
