The Panzerbefehlswagen 35 was a specialised German command tank developed from the chassis of the Panzerkampfwagen 35(t), itself originally a Czechoslovak design.

Adapted for battlefield command and control, this vehicle played a crucial role in coordinating armoured operations during the early years of the Second World War.

Externally similar to the standard tank, the Panzerbefehlswagen 35 was modified to accommodate additional radio equipment and command staff.

Its primary function was not front-line combat, but communication—allowing commanders to maintain contact with other units, relay orders, and respond quickly to changing battlefield conditions.

To support this role, the tank was fitted with enhanced radio systems and distinctive frame or rod antennas, making it recognisable among other vehicles.

In many cases, the main armament was reduced or replaced with a dummy gun to create space for the extra communication equipment.

Despite this, it retained a machine gun for basic self-defence.

The vehicle’s armour and mobility remained similar to the standard Panzer 35(t), providing adequate protection and cross-country performance for its intended role.

The Panzerbefehlswagen 35 saw service in early German campaigns, including the invasions of Poland and France.

Its presence significantly improved battlefield coordination, contributing to the effectiveness of German armoured tactics, particularly the fast-moving and well-organised operations often associated with Blitzkrieg warfare.

Although eventually replaced by more advanced command vehicles, the Panzerbefehlswagen 35 represents an important step in the development of dedicated command and control platforms within armoured forces—highlighting the growing importance of communication and coordination in modern warfare.
