The Polish TK-3 Light Reconnaissance Tank was a small, fast, and highly manoeuvrable tankette developed in the early 1930s as part of Poland’s efforts to modernise its armed forces.

Based on the British Carden Loyd tankette design, the TK-3 was adapted and improved by Polish engineers to better suit local requirements and battlefield conditions.

Compact and low-profile, the TK-3 was designed primarily for reconnaissance, scouting, and infantry support rather than direct combat.

Armed typically with a single 7.92mm machine gun, it lacked the heavy firepower and armour of larger tanks, but its small size made it difficult to detect and an effective vehicle for rapid movement across varied terrain.

Powered by a modest engine, the TK-3 could reach speeds of around 40 km/h on roads, giving it excellent mobility for its time.

Its simple construction also made it relatively easy to produce and maintain, allowing Poland to field a significant number of these vehicles throughout the 1930s.

In operational use, the TK-3 served extensively with Polish reconnaissance units, providing vital intelligence and screening capabilities.

During the 1939 invasion of Poland at the start of the Second World War, TK-3 tankettes were widely deployed.

Although they were outmatched by more heavily armed German armour, they were still used effectively in hit-and-run tactics, ambushes, and reconnaissance missions.

The TK-3 also formed the basis for further development, most notably the improved TKS tankette, which featured better armour and, in some cases, a more powerful 20mm cannon.

Today, the TK-3 is remembered as a key step in Poland’s armoured vehicle development—a practical and adaptable design that played an important role in the early mechanisation of its military forces.
