The Pz.Kpfw. II Ausf. C (Panzer II Ausführung C) was one of the most important early-war light tanks fielded by Germany, serving as a backbone of the Wehrmacht during the opening campaigns of the Second World War.

Originally intended as a temporary solution while more advanced tanks were developed, it went on to play a significant combat role in the invasions of Poland, France, and the early stages of Operation Barbarossa.

Armed with a 20mm KwK 30 autocannon and a coaxial 7.92mm machine gun, the Panzer II Ausf. C was effective against infantry, soft-skinned vehicles, and lightly armoured targets.

However, its firepower was limited against more heavily armoured opponents, which became increasingly apparent as the war progressed.

Its relatively thin armour provided protection against small arms fire and shrapnel but left it vulnerable to anti-tank weapons.

The Ausf. C variant introduced improvements over earlier versions, including better suspension with five road wheels and enhanced cross-country performance.

Powered by a Maybach engine, it offered good mobility and reliability, allowing it to keep pace with Germany’s fast-moving armoured units and support the tactics that would become known as Blitzkrieg.

Despite its limitations, the Pz.Kpfw. II Ausf. C was widely used in reconnaissance and light combat roles.

As more powerful tanks like the Panzer III and Panzer IV entered service, the Panzer II was gradually relegated to secondary duties, including training and scouting.

Today, the Pz.Kpfw. II Ausf. C is remembered as a crucial early-war vehicle—one that helped establish Germany’s armoured warfare capabilities and supported its rapid early successes, even as it was quickly overtaken by more advanced designs.
