The Pz.Kpfw. III Ausf. E was one of the first fully effective production variants of Germany’s primary medium tank, forming a key part of the Wehrmacht during the early years of the Second World War.

Designed as the main battle tank to engage enemy armour, it worked alongside the Panzer IV, which was intended for infantry support.

The Ausf. E introduced major improvements over earlier Panzer III variants, most notably a redesigned suspension system with six road wheels and torsion bar suspension.

This significantly enhanced ride quality, cross-country performance, and overall reliability, making it far more capable in sustained operations.

Initially armed with a 37mm KwK 36 gun and supported by multiple 7.92mm machine guns, the Panzer III Ausf. E was effective against early-war Allied tanks.

However, as enemy armour improved, later versions of the Panzer III would be upgunned with more powerful weapons.

The tank also featured improved armour protection compared to earlier models, increasing crew survivability.

Powered by a Maybach engine, the Ausf. E offered good mobility and speed, allowing it to operate effectively within Germany’s fast-moving armoured formations.

Its three-man turret—commander, gunner, and loader—was a significant tactical advantage, enabling better coordination and efficiency in combat compared to many contemporary designs.

The Pz.Kpfw. III Ausf. E saw action in early campaigns such as Poland and France, where it proved to be a capable and reliable vehicle.

It played a key role in establishing the effectiveness of German armoured tactics and set the standard for subsequent Panzer III variants.

Today, the Panzer III Ausf. E is regarded as a major step forward in tank design—marking the transition from experimental early models to a truly effective and balanced medium tank.
