The Renault FT-17 Light Tank with Octagonal Turret and Machine Gun was one of the most influential armoured vehicles ever built, originally developed in France during the First World War by Renault.

Its revolutionary layout—featuring a fully rotating turret, rear-mounted engine, and front driver’s position—became the standard design for nearly all future tanks.

This early production variant was equipped with a distinctive riveted octagonal turret and armed with a machine gun, typically an 8mm Hotchkiss.

Designed primarily for infantry support, it was highly effective against enemy troops, machine gun nests, and lightly fortified positions.

While it lacked the firepower to deal with heavily armoured targets, its role was to accompany advancing infantry and suppress opposition.

The FT-17 was compact, lightweight, and relatively easy to produce, which allowed it to be manufactured in large numbers.

Its small size and simple mechanics also made it easier to operate and maintain compared to earlier, more cumbersome tank designs.

Despite modest armour protection, it offered sufficient defence against small arms fire and battlefield debris.

After the First World War, the Renault FT-17 remained in service with many countries, including Poland, where it formed a significant part of early armoured forces.

By the outbreak of the Second World War, it was largely obsolete, but still saw limited use in secondary roles and training.

Today, the Renault FT-17 is regarded as a landmark in military engineering—a pioneering design that set the blueprint for modern tanks, with the octagonal turret variant representing one of its earliest and most recognisable forms.
