The Renault FT-17 with Round Turret and 37mm Gun was a later and more refined variant of the groundbreaking French light tank developed by Renault during the First World War.

Building on the success of earlier versions, this model featured a cast, rounded turret that offered improved ballistic protection compared to the earlier riveted designs.

Armed with the 37mm Puteaux SA18 cannon, this version of the FT-17 was designed to engage fortified positions, machine gun nests, and light defences more effectively than the machine gun-armed variants.

While the gun had limited anti-armour capability, it was well-suited to infantry support roles, firing high-explosive rounds against enemy positions.

Like all FT-17 variants, it utilised a revolutionary layout with a fully rotating turret, a rear-mounted engine, and a front-positioned driver.

This configuration set the standard for nearly all future tank designs. Despite its small size, the tank provided a significant tactical advantage on the battlefield, allowing infantry units to advance with armoured support.

The round turret design, often cast rather than riveted, improved durability and reduced the risk of structural weaknesses.

Combined with the FT-17’s relatively simple mechanics, this made it a robust and reliable vehicle for its time.

After the First World War, the FT-17 remained in widespread use across many countries, including Poland, where it served as part of early armoured forces.

By the time of the Second World War, it was largely obsolete but still used in secondary roles such as training, internal security, and reserve duties.

Today, the Renault FT-17 with round turret and 37mm gun is remembered as one of the most iconic and influential tank variants ever produced—combining innovative design with practical firepower in a way that shaped the future of armoured warfare.
